David Benjamin Gruenbaum Biography
David Benjamin Gruenbaum is the owner of Ahead of the Class, a private education and test preparation company in Irvine. Over the last nineteen years, David has worked with thousands of students helping them prepare for the SAT Reasoning Test, the SAT Subject Tests, and ACT. A recognized SAT expert, David has been a guest on CBS’s Early Show, Fox National News, and has been quoted for numerous articles by the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.
Over the last nineteen years, David has given free classes to African American students at the Los Angeles Urban League and to Hispanic students at the Shalimar Learning Center. Fluent in Spanish, David is able to show language connections between English and Spanish, helping Spanish-speaking students to see how they actually have an advantage in learning difficult English vocabulary words.
David has also been instrumental in pushing for new changes to the SAT. In September 2001, David wrote a letter to the College Board suggesting that the SAT I and SAT II math and verbal sections be merged into a single day test of math and English. David suggested this because he felt that the two tests overlapped each other and that a single day test would cut down on the amount of tests that California high school students would have to take. In March 2002, the College Board announced that it would be creating a new SAT that would essentially merge the SAT I and the SAT II.
In early 2004, David’s book, New SAT 2005: Inside Out, was released nationally. This was the first book in the country that helped prepare students for the New SAT. The second edition, now titled, Seven Days to a Better SAT Score, features David’s style of integrating education and humor, and is available in Barnes and Noble and Borders stores, as well as online at Amazon.com.
In 1990, David and Fred Joblin co-wrote Word Up: a vocabulary book that features the Realogics method, whereby students connect vocabulary and math skills to their own pop culture. David is also the creator of The Math of English, a method that teaches students who are stronger in math how to look at language from a logic perspective.
Recently, David has also introduced a completely new course to California: a combination SAT/ACT preparation class. This class helps students decide which test is easier for them, SAT or ACT, and then helps students to prepare for both tests.
